The Product Technology Section is organized into three teams: Product Metallurgy and Processing, Coated Products and Services. Each uses a multidisciplinary approach to develop and enhance cutting-edge process and product technology and to provide advanced solutions to customers in the automotive, construction, appliance, tinplate, electrical and tubular markets. In addition, the Product Technology Section experts provide technical support to finishing operations across the corporation. The Services Team represents professionals in various areas such as safety, training, information resources, and metallographic and project services.
Product Metallurgy and Processing
The Product Metallurgy and Processing Team utilizes the combined talents of a diverse team of mechanical and physical metallurgists, mechanical engineers and chemists, who are keeping
U. S. Steel’s grades of highly formable, low-carbon, high-strength sheet, tin-mill and tubular products in a favored competitive position in regard to performance, quality and cost. An integral part of this effort is developing and implementing state-of-the-art processing technologies to achieve sophisticated product requirements.
Coated Products
The Coated Products Team focuses on the development and improvement of applications for products in the automotive, construction, tin-mill and other areas. For automotive body applications, the focus is on improving the quality of the hot-dip and electrolytically deposited zinc and zinc iron coatings through optimization of the coating microstructure, composition and morphology. In construction, efforts are centered on developing environmentally acceptable chemical treatments and high-emittance coatings. To support these studies, an extensive corrosion evaluation capability is maintained. In the area of tin-mill products, new coatings and lacquers are evaluated, and environmentally friendly application techniques are developed to provide superior corrosion resistance for tinplate cans. An important tool used in this research is a hot-dip process simulator representing a multi-million-dollar investment to determine optimum hot-dip galvanizing line parameters for producing new steels for automotive and construction applications.
Services
The Metallographic Facility is key to providing support to development, customer service and technical support projects for the entire U. S. Steel Research and Technology Center. Teams of professional analysts utilize a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment, which includes a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Auger Electron and Laser Raman Spectrometer and other analytical equipment.
The Knowledge Resource Center (KRC) facilities consist of a core collection of more than 500,000 internal documents, 25,000 books, 100 journals, technical translations, dissertations and annual reports. The KRC has access to numerous research databases, including TCGoogle, for Research and Technology Center documents. With all of these resources, the KRC is able to meet the information needs of users anywhere in the company.
U. S. Steel Research Training provides training services to all U. S. Steel operations. U. S. Steel Research Training works with the internal resources of U. S. Steel Research and other U. S. Steel organizations to develop and implement corporate training solutions. U. S. Steel Research Training facilitates in-depth technology courses provided by Research experts, as well as professional technical exchanges, which bring together professionals from across the corporation to discuss the know-how and best practices of their operations.
