The Process Technology Section includes several expert teams providing know-how on the most effective and environmentally sustainable applications of raw materials and on technology innovation related to ironmaking and steelmaking practices. In addition, the experts provide computational modeling in support of research activities in all areas from ironmaking to finishing, as well as technical assistance and failure analysis services to operations across the corporation.
Raw Materials and Ironmaking
The Raw Materials and Ironmaking Team focuses its efforts on providing technical assistance regarding everything from ore processing to ironmaking, including the coal and cokemaking process. This team of experts provides guidance on the selection and optimum utilization of raw materials and fuels. They provide assistance in the development of cost-effective practices for the recycling of byproducts to minimize disposal costs, and they support plant efforts to increase process efficiency, reduce energy intensity and decrease environmental impact. Through the use of process know-how, laboratory facilities and efforts in the field, the Raw Materials and Ironmaking engineers and technicians provide guidance to our facilities so that they are able to operate safely, cost effectively and in an environmentally conscious manner.
Steelmaking and Casting
The Steelmaking and Casting Team identifies opportunities, evaluates technologies and assists in the selection and implementation of new processes. The team is closely involved with projects aimed at: developing process models to control and enhance processes; achieving energy/mass balances at minimal cost; increasing process capabilities with new technologies; and improving process consistency for product quality and higher efficiencies. This group is also heavily involved in developing plant operational improvements, often traveling to operating facilities to ensure that key improvements are effectively implemented.
Materials Technology and Modeling
The Materials Technology Team assists in the proper selection, design, repair and maintenance of all U. S. Steel equipment to achieve reliable and safe performance across U. S. Steel operations. This group focuses on metallic and refractory materials failure analyses, material qualifications and specific application recommendations. The Modeling Team focuses on in-process computational modeling and engineering to support research activities in all ironmaking, steelmaking, casting, rolling and sheet finishing operations.
